I have not always been getting my emails, so if you are seriously interested, call me.

Before you decide to buy a puppy, please be aware that a Maltese is a high maintenance dog. He/She requires a lot of time, attention, and human interaction! Even my biggest pups are small. The little ones require extra attention, and a close eye on them. I don't recommend purchasing a Maltese puppy, ESPECIALLY a tiny, if you are always gone for long hours, have small children, or if you don't plan on making it a part of your family. PLEASE READ UP ON THE BREED! This is just a guide, not a professional book!

The internet has been a great resource for building my knowledge. I highly recommend anyone who wants to bring a puppy home to become informed about the Maltese breed, as well as veterinary concerns. Knowledge is power. Use it!

They choke !! When giving your puppy food or snacks, remember how small he/she is. They get the smallest things caught in their throats. Cut up everything you give them into small pieces, especially when they are puppies and throughout their lifetime.

I use a high quality puppy dry food. READ LABELS. Avoid dyes, fillers and preservatives when possible. Stay aware of food recalls! Puppies/dogs do not need people food. They just can't digest it. Do not give your puppy milk! A good diet will help insure many happy years with your companion!! Now that's love....

I also recommend a halter leash for your walks due to their small trachea, and a BELL COLLAR when they are running around the house, as they tend to get under foot! THAT CAN BE DEADLY!

Maltese can suffer from low blood sugar until they are about 12 weeks old, and longer when they are tiny and over excited or stressed. Keep their first days home quiet and calm as they adjust . Make sure they eat well before vigorous play or undergoing stress. If they seem sluggish after play, shake or even vomit,a dime size dose of NUTRI-CAL or NUTRI-STAT on their tongue should bring them out of it. If they seem to be playing really hard, it wouldn't hurt to give them a dose, but you can overdo it, so no more than once or twice a day. A small amount of honey or karo syrup added to their water is also suggested (1 TSP. TO 1 CUP OF WATER). Call me or your vet IMMEDIATELY if your baby doesn't eat, (Especially the day you receive your baby). It is a life or death situation!!!

WORMS: Don't expect your puppy to be completely worm free. It just doesn't happen. Dogs suffer from roundworms during puppy-hood. De-worming gets rid of the worms not the eggs; therefore repeated de-worming are required. Re-contamination from worm eggs in the grass and soil is a constant problem even in older dogs. I recommend you take a stool sample to your vet to have it checked for worms and coccidia on your first visit and again when you go in for shots.

Watch where you walk or sit!!. You will learn to shuffle your feet when you walk. And ALWAYS watch where you step!!!. They run under your feet until they figure out it can be dangerous. They will jump on the couch or chair when you are about to sit down, and end up getting sat upon! Hold them when you are sitting until they have learned to get out of your way. BE VERY CAREFUL! Never leave small children alone with small puppies. Many Maltese puppy dogs, (even 12 LB) have been known to meet their demise to outside dangers! Other dogs, hawks, owls, and coyotes have been known to carry them off. Use extreme CAUTION when your Maltese dog is outside. Keep in mind people have been known to steal them too. One new owner had her baby stolen while paying for gas!

They do quite well as indoor pets. You can use potty pads or newspaper for puppy training. Be patient and consistent. They aim to please!!!

Besides feeding my dogs Blue Buffalo Dog Food, I use NuVet Labs supplements in my dogs daily diet. I am very impressed with their products. To learn more go to:
